Mannheim Middle School
The Office of the School Nurse- Overview
Skeleton

Hi!  My name is Mrs. K, RNc, BSN.  I'm the School Nurse at Mannheim Middle School.  I started working at the School in 2005.  I moved to Germany from South Korea with my husband, and am originally from Colorado.  My nursing experience includes working in a maternal child health in many different capacities, and school nursing.    I have also worked as an Emergency Department staff nurse.  I have certifications as an instructor for Basic Life Support for the American Heart Association, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation.  When I first arrived in Germany I worked 2 years at the Heidelberg MEDDAC, and had a great time learning about the medical community.

I have many responsibilities as the School Nurse.  Besides taking care of sick students and providing first aid, I also monitor student's immunization records, provide health screenings, and administer medications as ordered by physicians.  I also perform assessments for students who are referred to the special education program.  I make student referrals to the medical clinic, optometry clinic, and social work services.  I provide health information to students and frequently guest lecture in classes.

Immunization Requirements:

Parents registering their children in DODea for the school year 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 will find they must meet additional immunization requirements. In coordination with military medical commands, DODea has added three required inoculations for students. The three are: Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine (MCV4); Tetanus and Diphtheria Toxoids and Acellular Pertussis Vaccine (TDAP – adolescent preparation); and Hepatitis A.

The immunization guidelines for military dependent children follow the guidelines from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and are based upon recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. These requirements were coordinated with the Military Vaccine Agency.

These are minimum requirements. Additional requirements may be determined by the military medical commands based upon needs in specific locations. Parents can contact their child's school nurse for information and guidance. The updated version of the immunizations form can be found here.

Parents should bear in mind that the additional immunizations are age-specific and not all students will require all of the additional vaccines.

  Medication Policy:

The School Nurse does not administer medications, to include over-the-counter drugs, except when prescribed for individuals with conditions such as:
    - Asthma
    - Allergies to bee stings
    - Heart conditions
    - Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)

These emergency medications may be kept at school and administered by the School Nurse.  The following is required for administration:
    - Written permission from the parent
    - Written orders from the physician
    - Medication in a pharmacy labeled container with appropriate information.

Purpose of Health Services:

The purpose of the School Health Services is to strengthen the educational process by improving the health status and health knowledge of students. The goal of the program is to help students become responsible for their own health and wellness.

The School Health Services cover three areas: health education, health services, and the maintenance of a healthy school environment. It is a comprehensive program that promotes and maintains optimum health for all students.

More comprehensive description of School Health Services can be found in DS Manual 2942.0, "School Health Services Guide".
